Nestled quietly in a humble strip mall in Bellevue, Nashville, Voodoo Gumbo is a culinary gem bringing authentic Cajun and Creole flavors straight from the heart of New Orleans to Music City. Specializing in traditional Louisiana cuisine, this restaurant is a beacon for anyone craving the rich, soulful tastes of gumbo, jambalaya, and other classic Southern delicacies.
From the moment you step inside, the warm, inviting atmosphere feels like a comforting embrace, reminiscent of a neighborhood spot where every guest is treated like family. Despite its modest exterior, Voodoo Gumbo delivers bold, unforgettable dishes that showcase the depth and complexity of Cajun cooking.
The menu is a treasure trove of Southern specialties. Start your meal with a plate of expertly fried Alligator Bites or Fried Oysters, each bite crispy on the outside and tender within. The Seafood Gumbo is a standout—brimming with wild-caught Gulf shrimp and succulent crab bathed in a delicate, flavorful roux, it’s a bowl that captures the essence of Louisiana’s coast.
For those seeking hearty, comforting dishes, the Chicken & Andouille Sausage Gumbo features slow-roasted chicken and savory sausage simmered in a rich, dark roux that is both intensely satisfying and deeply aromatic. The Catfish Atchafalaya and Catfish Etouffee showcase the versatility of Mississippi catfish, cooked to golden perfection or smothered in robust Creole sauce.
Those with a sweet tooth will find paradise in the Beignet Sundae or the indulgent Amaretto Bread Pudding — desserts that pay homage to New Orleans' legendary pastry traditions with a modern twist.
But what truly elevates Voodoo Gumbo is not just the food — it’s the heartfelt hospitality that permeates every table. Whether it’s “Scott,” whose exceptional service has left lasting impressions, or co-owner Herb, known for his genuine kindness and hands-on care, guests repeatedly remark on the family-like warmth that accompanies their dining experience.
Reviewers who grew up in New Orleans, like Michael Chambless’s wife, find the flavors remarkably authentic, describing it as the closest taste of home they’ve found outside Louisiana. First-timers quickly become regulars after tasting the big, bold flavors and appreciating the attentive, friendly staff. As Wade Wade notes, the excellence of Voodoo Gumbo shines through undisguised — an unassuming exterior hiding Nashville’s highest-rated Cajun kitchen.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a serious fix of Creole comfort food, Voodoo Gumbo is a destination that promises to satisfy your palate and welcome you with open arms. It’s more than just a meal; it’s an experience steeped in tradition, authenticity, and genuine hospitality that leaves you savoring every bite long after you’ve left.

We had a great experience today! Our son chose Voodoo Gumbo for his birthday meal. It was our 3rd time going and it gets better every time. Scott, our server, was exceptional but really all staff we interacted with were so friendly and attentive. I’ve heard about Voodoo Gumbo for years from someone but finally tried it and we are so happy we did. Coming from NOLA people, born and raised… we think it’s fantastic!
Absolutely one of the BEST Cajun restaurants we have eaten at in the State. My wife who is from New Orleans said it reminds her of home. We highly recommend you eat here if you love good Cajun food.
This restaurant is amazing! I had the shrimp platter and it was delicious! Everyone was very nice. Our waiter Elektra, was sweet and the co-owner, Herb is the best! He was consistently checking in on us and being hospitable. I would definitely come back again. They treated us like family and the food was good. What more can you ask for?
It's clear why Voodoo Gumbo has the highest rated Cajun food in Nashville. This is as close as you can get to New Orleans anywhere in Music City, and it's about time I made it out to Bellevue for this experience. With nondescript lettering at the western end of an ordinary strip mall, it doesn't look like much from the outside. But enter this haven of Creole classics and be amazed. They even give small samples of their gumbo, something unheard of in most restaurants! After a sample, I started with the fried oysters. They're now among my favorite appetizers in Nashville, and that's saying something for such an extensive food scene! They're crispy, tender, and quite remarkable! I had the Catfish Atchafalaya as an entree, a dish that's incredibly hearty and flavorfully satisfying! The catfish stays perfectly crispy and it's probably my new favorite catfish in the city. That's surrounded by a gloriously rich étouffée with shrimp, and ample crawfish so fresh you'd think it was lobster! It's like Voodoo's answer to a lobster bisque! And this is an incredible way to sample the masterful cuisine at Voodoo Gumbo. But I'll need to return for the po' boys and the beignets!
We drove from Memphis, TN just to try this restaurant. I am so glad that we finally made it during their business hours. Everything was delicious! They were so nice and friendly. Also, they were gracious enough to let us taste the gumbo before purchasing. Before leaving, we were blessed to meet Mr. Herb. This gentleman is a CLASS ACT! ⭐ It is not surprising that this business is successful. The kindness and friendliness that Mr. Herb exudes is amazing! We are already planning to return in one week just to patronize the business. That you for a remarkable first visit to your restaurant. We are thankful for the entire Voodoo Gumbo team! I wish you much more continued success!
Wow what a hidden gem!! Everything was amazing from the food to the service!! The owner was amazing came to our table several times to insure everything was going well. The waiter was phenomenal. They let us try samples of the gumbo which were all delicious. If you want authentic food from Nola definitely come here. Next time I'm in Nash this will be my first stop!!!
I stumbled across this place from a google search. I was in the area & super hungry and wanted something delicious to eat. The food here is amazing & seasoned well. The fried catfish is just right. I had the creole jambalaya as well. I enjoyed it, just wish it was spicier but that’s a personal preference. I can’t wait to visit again to try more items. All of the staff was kind as well & took great care of us.
